Crime and Violence in Baltimore

Your job is to solve the crime problem in Baltimore. Please aim your analyses and solutions at working class black neighborhoods, especially those whose residents are marginalized.

Before you provide a solution, please tell us what a crime is. Identify the kinds of crimes that you are talking about. What are the most prevalent crimes in the hood? Identify different variables that come into play involving the problem. Is or should crime be the primary concern of the black community? What are some solutions you offer?

  1. Journal Entry:

As we look at crime in our communities we have to address the number of black males who are slain in our streets every day. As one who works in a funeral home, I see daily the aftermath of these senseless deaths. Young men who should be in the prime of their lives gunned down and stabbed to death over meaingless things. When will we tire of burying our young? When will we tire of these stories playing out every day on the news?

  2. Crime can be defined as any act or behavior that violated the laws in the legal system. We have violent crimes and non-violent crimes. Unfortunately enough, the violent crimes are the most popular ones in the urban area. Some of the most common crimes in the city are armed robbery, homocides, drug tafficking etc. Yes, crimes should be the primary concern in the black communities. Crimes affect everyones, those who live in the community as well as those who live outside of the community. The properties value go down in the communities that are known for violent crimes. It would be easier to say let's put more police in the community but studies proved that doesn't solve the problem. crimes just move to another part of the city. The police and the commuities need to work together to establish at least a comprehensive relation. New york city is the prime example when it comes to reduce crimes.

  3. Fpierre, what did they do in NYC to reduce crime? Did they reduce all kinds of crime -- violent and nonviolent? I suspect they employed several strategies which all contributed to the improvement.... Is this something you read about in class? I'd be interested to learn more about what NYC did.

Nadean, you mentioned guns and drugs as being the root cause of crime. I agree, but Baltimore isn't the only city with gun and drug problems... What makes Baltimore more violent, with a higher murder and crime rate than other cities? I think there is a degree of hopelessness here that may contribute to criminal behavior. If someone doesn't believe things can get better, maybe it makes it easier to justify a live-for-the-moment carelessness about other people's lives?
